Wine Buying in 5 Easy Steps

Step 1: Establish a Relationship

No matter where you lie on the wine knowledge spectrum, try to connect with someone in your local wine shop. Even if you are unfamiliar with the shop you are headed to, look it up! *A knowledgeable staff will go a long way to ensure you are getting the best help at the best prices.

Step 2: Price Point

Before strolling into a shop ask yourself what you are willing to spend. Not only will this leave you with a few extra dollars in your pocket, but it will help the staff make better selections for you as well! *Don’t be embarrassed, there is good wine at every price.

Step 3: For Whom...

Buying a gift? Keep in mind the person you are shopping for. What is their wine knowledge? Expert, newbie, or maybe they land somewhere in the middle. If it’s for you, then no pressure! Ask yourself what the last wine was that wowed you and go from there? Or better yet grab a staff pick. *You might even get into their secret stash...

Step 4: Style

Now it’s about getting down to the details. Do you want a red or a white? Imported or domestic? Light, heavy, or something in between? Bold, fruity, acidic, crisp? Whatever you are looking for, a great staff member will be able to guide you in the right direction. *Take a leap of faith, it’s just wine.

Step 5: With Food?

This is where it gets a bit tricky. Are you trying to pair your wine with a particular meal? If so, mention it! Many wines are great with food, but some are best left to their own devices. It is not a bad idea give staff a heads up. *Now that you’ve checked all your boxes... Go and find the perfect bottle of wine.
