First off, apologies are in order, as it is no longer the month it says it is at the top of this very page. While I knew that May was going to be a busy month for me, the sheer volume of hiccups made me want to excise my literal diaphragm. Nevertheless, I am proud to present you these belated beer club selections!
Sometimes we think of influence as a one way street, cause influences effect, teachers influence their students, and the intergalactic lizard alliance influences the government. Yet, in this ever interconnecting world, we are seeing an increasing amount of two way traffic on this proverbial highway. The expressions we are featuring today are an example of such chaos.
Out of the United Kingdom, these two breweries take influence, and sometimes materials, from their country’s former colonies.
Coniston Brewing Company, founded in 1995 by Ian Bradley, may seem like a primarily local concern, a spot to stop in the remarkably picturesque town for which it is named. But its trophy shelf and world wide customer base would beg to differ. Within 3 years of its founding, their flagship “Bluebird Bitter” won Supreme Champion Beer at the Great British Beer Festival. We are featuring a spin on this beer which includes North American Grown Mount Hood Hops giving an old world style a new world twist.
The other brewery we are featuring, Thornbridge Brewery, is also quite young yet well awarded. Starting from the Thornbridge Hall estate, which has its own interesting history, the brewery’s quick growth required them to move facilities. Luckily, the relocation supported their rise, and they quickly received multiple consecutive Gold Medals at the World Beer Awards, and various medals at the World Beer Cup. We are featuring two beers from them, their flagship, Jaipur, an American Style IPA which uses American grown hops. The other is their Everybody Good Time, another American Style IPA that was made in collaboration with Bundobust, an Indian restaurant in the UK.
Apologies again for the belated selections, the June picks will be out in a more timely manner. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy these brews!
Cheers,
Daniel Ruppert
