While the current iteration of Het Boerenerf dates back to 2019, with bottles first hitting the market in 2021, with very few creative liberties one could claim that the whole enterprise actually got started in 1864. Initially named Cammaert Brewery, following founder’s granddaughters marriage to Martinus Josephus Eylenbosch, it was renamed Brouwerij Eylenbosch (not to be confused with the other Brouwerij Eylenbosch which was founded by a distant relative of the same family.)
A geuze and lambic brewery, its fortunes sagged with a more general decline in both categories' popularity beginning in the 1960’s. Eventually, the family decided to cease production and rely on their farm to make a living. Fifth generation scion Senne Eylenbosch, who worked at the great 3 Fonteinen brewery, began to revive the facilities in 2019 however, and subsequently left 3 Fonteinen in 2020 to devote all of his time to Boerenerf.
Today, Het Boerenerf works as a blend house with no in-house brewing operations. Sourcing wort from various nearby breweries, and prioritizing locally grown adjuncts to create their blends. Their flagship, 'Cuvée Heritage' was first released in 2022 honoring the historical brewers from their community, reviving old blending techniques with modern technologies and palates. This month we are featuring their Royal bottling. A blend of lambic, mead, and black currants, this ale is a perfect beer to welcome the return of warmer months.

Tasting Notes: Pours a hazy brick red with a short lasting head. White pepper, black currants, and dry honey make up the forefront of the nose with a background of barnyard funk. Light bubbles with tart acidity on the palate. Blackcurrants, meyer lemon rind, and rose petals fill the mouth. Lasting dry finish. Spring blended and bottled. Quick note: If you have a sparkling wine stopper, this bottle will last, and evolve in the fridge. The funk and bright acidity blow off, and the warming honey and softer fruit notes come forward. |
