Nadia Curto 2020 "La Foia" Barolo
Importer Notes: Despite her disarmingly warm and chatty manner, Nadia Curto is a respected, veteran cellar talent and born into multi-generation "royalty" in La Morra, Barolo. The OCD-grade perfection of the certified organic farming at Az. Agr. Curto, and the integrity/quality of Nadia’s wine is undeniable. She and her father Marco farm only one small hillside vineyard, including a significant percentage of the famed Barolo cru Arborina. She is Elio Altare's in-law/niece and depending on the specific bottling, her style either resembles Elio's modernist precision and instant gratification (for the Barolo "Arborina" label), or the more antique, neutral botti character of her father, Marco's (for the long-aged Barolo "La Foia" bottling, our personal favorite). But regardless of style and cellar technique, everything is full-on organic, native yeast ferment, and the wines are made in the small basement of Nadia’s house which sits right at the base of Arborina.
A heady aroma of violets is found at the forefront, paired with the rich scent of damson plums, as if stewed with spices in preparation for a pie. The texture of the wine is rounded yet lifted by lively acidity with fine tannins, providing structure without overpowering or diminishing any of the flavors. A solid classic Barolo.
