Wine from Unexpected Regions
Youngs Market Company
An incredibly fragrant nose full of sweet apricot and gingery spice. The palate is luscious and generous, but has great acid which tightens the wine, adding freshness and a clean crisp finish. Slight pithy feel which builds on the spice notes.
"Density and freshness to the layered and delicious white that shows cream, lemon-curd, cooked-pear and sliced-apple character. Medium to full body. Flavorful finish."-93 points James Suckling
Medium red with a bright purple hue. Aromas of dark, brambly, blueberry aromas are matched with dried herbs, earth and undergrowth. On the palate, sarsaparilla and classic blue fruits deliver a rich, velvety mouthfeel, backed by very soft and fully ripe tannins.

Handcrafted by the Applewood team in Adelaide Hills, this amaro is made from botanicals native to the coastal rainforests of Australia. With native riberries, fresh davidson plums and aromatic strawberry gum leaves, Okar Amaro showcases a unique expression of the sunburnt country.
Cherry red in colour, Okar Amaro heralds a fresh botanical bitter assortment of blackberry, mint, thyme, and citrus, followed by a silky medium-bodied blend of fruitiness and herbal tea like notes. Excellent substitute for Campari in either a negroni or a spritz.
On the nose, the expression of morello cherry is surprising. On the palate, the tannins are supple, rich, and powerful. Finally, precise and rigorous aging made it possible to retain in the wine all its freshness, a guarantee of long aging. A surprising grape variety, a real discovery.

This bright and expressive Pinot leads with dark cherry, plum and undertones of thyme characters. Toasted oak notes impart a nice mouthfeel against the generous palate through a long finish. Undeniably approachable and will mature gracefully over the next ten years.
"The 2017 Central Otago Pinot Noir comes out of the chute a bit green and stemmy (it's 50% whole cluster). It clearly needs a year or two to settle down and integrate that element with the bold cherry fruit, but I have little doubt that those components will come together in time, resulting in a wine that's substantially more attractive than it is currently. It's medium to full-bodied, with ample ripeness, silky tannins and solid length on the finish, all of which augur well for the future."- 91 Points Robert Parker
Bin 51 captures many of the attributes of the Eden Valley locale. The region’s high altitude and cool climate induces riesling with great finesse and elegance with a capacity for long-term cellaring. South Australia has gained worldwide recognition for producing world-class riesling and Eden Valley always features. In their youth, the wines possess scented floral and citrus aromas, with a mineral edge and marked natural acidity, contributing significantly to the palate texture and flavour. The evolution of Penfolds Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling opens another chapter in a long history of Penfolds involvement in winemaking from this variety.

ASKOS is a project of rediscovery and selection of ancient Apulian grape varieties that are almost disappearing. Wines are produced by using exclusively these indigenous varietals, cultivated in their most suitable terroirs according to the traditional method. The Greek word “Askos”, or “wine jar” was chosen as a symbol of the winemaking, a practice started by the ancient Greeks in Puglia. The final wine is matured in stainless steel vats for 4 months before bottling, and has an aging potential of 2-3 years.
TASTING NOTES: Pale pink, crystal and bright; elegant bouquet, persistent and aromatic notes of strawberry and cranberry. Light weight in the mouth with waves of flavor across the palate. Savory finish with a touch of acidity.
The 2016 Sonnet Tempranillo is composed of 100% Tempranillo from the Gali Vineyard. Oncew fermentation was complete 38% of the wine was aged in Hungarian oak. The wine was then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Only 170 cases were produced. Tony writes, “In the 1980s, a summer had arrived and there was no acting work in sight, so I picked up my back pack and started hitch hiking throughout Europe. When I arrived in Spain, I came across a wonderful wine varietal, Tempranillo, and it had the most aromatic aroma I had ever noticed in any wine. Since I became a winemaker, I have been searching for a great Califonia Tempranillo vineyard and finaly found one a few years ago, and this is the first Sonnet offering from that quest. It shows an amazing depth of fruit, from plums and blackberry to hints of black cherry. It is a robust wine that has been aged for more than two years in oak barrels and will age gracefully in bottle for many years to come.”
Few food and wine pairings can top a delicious Tempranillo matched with grilled lamb chops. The Sonnet Tempranillo pairs nicely with medium to strong-flavored semi-hard and hard cheeses (Manchego), and dishes with tomatoes and tomato sauces. It also pairs beautifully with regional Spanish dishes such as caldo de temporada-Galician style pumpkin-chicken soup, smoked bacon, chorizo, potato and broccoli rabe, or costilla al vino tinto-Tempranillo-braised short ribs, confit potatoes and crispy leeks.

The criterion for selecting a vineyard is quite simple: the site has to be compelling. Attributes that create a special vineyard are uniqueness in climate, varietal, soil, vine age, and vineyard practice. Perhaps most important though, the vineyard must show quality, balance, and soul.
This wine is wonderful. With such amazing natural acidity, a deeper and more brooding wine can still find balance. Amarena black cherries, earth, balsamic, violets, quinine, graphite and macerated plums are aromatic highlights. A full and lush front and mid palate are balanced by the firm and fresh structure.
