Patrick Sullivan 2022 Bull Samp Chardonnay
Importer Notes: A nuanced and subtle chardonnay that presents place more than any particular winemaking slant. Aromatics of pickled wattleseed, yellow pear, melon, finger lime, crushed rock, and lemon aspen (a floral native citrus). Delicate and intricately knit palate, persistent and balanced acid, with pleasantly plump fruit weight. A bit warmer and more ample than Patrick’s other single vineyards, according to him: “more of a party vibe.”
Funny how a wine (or variety) holds sway over one’s life, directing it, changing it and perhaps, making it even more meaningful. For Patrick Sullivan, it’s chardonnay, his muse. Crap name, Bull Swamp, but the wine is pure, refined and breathtaking. While it has all the mouth-watering flavours one craves in a chardonnay, it’s the palate, again, that seals the deal. Long, detailed hints of lees just to extend it with popping finger lime acidity. He captures the purity of the site, teases out its essence and bottles it. - 96 points, Halliday Wine Companion (Jane Faulkner)
Direct and open. This is heading into ripe stone fruit and tropical territory. Nectarine and melon. The richness of the fruit accompanied by toffee apple and vanilla pod. Very well woven together. There’s still a mineral edge to the nose, though, which provides a counterpoint. The palate is expansive but given shape by grapefruit refreshment and mineral spice. Vibrant and tingling on the long, layered, chalky finish. - 17/20, JancisRobinson.com (Oliver Coleman)
