SAISON
This month we’ll be focusing on one of my favorite styles of beer. I love all styles of saison, from the earthy and spicy farmhouse style to the light and refreshing grisette. They all have a special place in my heart, especially as a lover of wine. These ales not only improve with age in the short to mid term, they share the same complexity and bright, high acid, textured, sometimes spicy, and herbaceous character of some of my favorite white wines in the natural realm.
Brasserie de la Senne was officially started in 2010 by Yvan Da Baets and Bernard Leboucq, though the 2 had been working together since 2003. Da Baets, a former social worker, started his professional beer career at De Ranke, though he had fallen in love with beer years before at Cantillon where he worked at the museum and volunteered at as many breweries as he could. Leboucq was originally a home brewer and owned a microbrewery in the suburbs of Brussels. At Brasserie de la Senne they focus on hoppy, balanced beers and traditional 19th and early 20th century Belgian styles.
Side Project Brewing was started by Corey and Karen King in 2013. They met working in fine dining and shared a mutual love of wine, beer, and traveling, and eventually brewing themselves in their apartment. Karen went into beer sales and Corey into wine after moving to St. Louis in 2007, and shortly after Corey became a professional brewer at Perennial Ales. They focus on Belgian inspired and barrel aged beers, including co-ferments with wine made from hybrid grapes like Vidal and Chambourcin.
Cheers!
