While Sangiovese is the most prolific of the Umbrian varietals, Umbria’s identity is intimately connected to Sagrantino, a grape that has enjoyed premier positioning in Umbria for centuries, conducting an extensive and noted history as a passitowine. In fact, though an exceedingly rare native—limited to a mere 400 acres of vineyards—this distinct minority mediates between the two discrete flavor profiles that characterize this region’s offerings—earth-driven Sangiovese-based wines and modern-oriented blends crafted from the principal international varieties. The wines of Paolo Bea, however, are slightly “off center,” veering more towards the former profile—headlined by the wines of Lungarotti—than the latter. This stylistic predilection is enabled by Bea’s rejection of barrique, yet his wines do not take on a distinct profile; rather, distinctions are realized both between vintages and, at times, within the context of a single vintage.

Dominus Estate is the Napa Valley property of Bordeaux producer Christian Moueix. The wine is bottled from the historic Napanook Vineyard. Located at the foothills of the Mayacamas, the vineyard was planted in 1838 and continues to evolve under the stewardship of Christian Moueix. The estate’s Bordeaux varietals benefit from the Yountville microclimate where temperatures are moderated by cool breezes from the San Pablo Bay. The resulting wine is a uniquely refined expression of this special terroir.
"Lots of crushed stone, lead pencil and licorice aromas that are extremely aromatic and bright. Black cherries, cloves and purple fruit, too. Full body and a round and ripe center-palate with a juicy interior. It opens at the end with a savory and juicy finish. Layered and beautiful. Drinkable now, but better in three or four years." 98 Points James Suckling

The 2019 Quilceda Creek Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich and layered wine with great balance. Blackberry, black cherry, cassis and plum fruit coat the entire palate in a horizontal, broad fashion. Complex notes of violets, sandalwood, soy, black truffle, walnut, forest floor and minerals are some of the descriptors that may be found in this complex and decadent wine.
"Flirting with perfection, instantly impressive and marked with impeccable shine and polish, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon from Champoux vineyard (90%) and Mach One vineyard (10%). The Cabernet explodes out of a glass with exuberance and power, prancing with layers of juicy black fruit, plum compote, black raspberry jus and hints of cinnamon-spiced black cherries. Full-bodied and with a ripe attack, velvety tannins sway with a glossy mouthfeel that is seductive and hedonistic, and the wine displays a balanced structure with a generous frame. It somersaults to an ever-evolving finish that bursts with layers of complexity, finesse and richness. What a stunning bottle! Bravo! Two thumbs up! 99 Points Wine Advocate
Superb fruit and spice aromas with an oaky note on the nose. Intense, full and yet delicate on the palate, the wine has a charming velvetiness.
Ideal pairings for this wine include game birds, fattened chicken in cream sauce, or Burgundian cheeses."What a fragrant nose of flowers, cherries, licorice and delicate spice! Very elegant and lacy on the medium-bodied palate with breathtaking integration of fine fruit and fine tannins. Super-silky, long finish that’s very sensual. Drink or hold." 96 Points James Suckling
Domaine Des Comtes Lafon
Very complex wine with red and black fruit aromas and flavors - red and black cherry, some blueberry - with floral notes of violets, forest floor. There are savory flavors - balsamic - and espresso. Pair with coq au vin, beef, game.
The long growing season in 2018 allowed these grapes to fully develop rich, dark flavors, while the mild temperatures preserved deeply hued color, great structure, and concentration. The nose begins with blackberry, boysenberry, and cassis layered with mocha and dark chocolate. Then some spice and herb come forward – cinnamon, nutmeg, graham cracker, and fresh sage and mint – adding layers, complexity, and depth to the nose. These flavors come through on the palate as well along with silky smooth, finely integrated tannin, beautiful acidity and freshness, and a long finish.
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose needs a little coaxing before revealing a gorgeous melange of baked black cherries, boysenberries and warm cassis plus hints of mocha, black olives, smoked meats and lilacs with a waft of pencil shavings. The concentrated, hedonic black fruit layers expand in the full-bodied mouth, revealing beautiful floral and savory layers with a firm frame of firm, exquisitely ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length." 99 Points Robert Parker

The Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine born from a hallowed mountain estate with a storied pedigree and exceptional provenance that stands among Napa Valley’s most iconic red wines.
“Always one of the top wines in a vintage, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is another gorgeous wine with a more plush, supple texture that hides solid underlying structure and tannins. Beautiful notes of blueberries, new leather, camphor, violets, and smoked tobacco all flow to a full-bodied, seamless, gorgeously textured beauty that’s very much in the style of the vintage. Possessing remarkable purity, flawless balance, and building tannins, give bottles 4 5 years of bottle age, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 25+ years.” 98 Points: As good as it gets. These wines reach the peak of my personal scale of quality.
“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months. The alcohol weighed in at 14.5%. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out of the gate with bold expressions of warm cassis, wild blueberries, and black raspberries, plus hints of chocolate box, menthol, tapenade, smoked meats, and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is bursting with vibrant black fruits, framed by fantastically ripe, fine-grained tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and mineral-laced. Jubilation is our newest wine in the Colgin Cellars collection. Jubilation is our Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine created with a selection of barrels that display earlier drinking characteristics from our three hillside vineyards. As our vine age has matured and small additions have been made to our original holdings, we had the privilege of increasing our selectivity. Following the blending of our single-vineyard wines, we were fortunate to have a collection of barrels that conveyed the same elegance and complexity for which we are known, yet on a more supple, approachable frame. Jubilation is a wine ready to enjoy now, with the pedigree to age gracefully in the cellar, maintaining the Colgin Cellars’ hallmarks of perfume, freshness, and minerality. “

The 2017 Gaja Barbaresco is a garnet color in appearance. A generous and flowery nose with intense notes of rose, licorice and blood orange. It is showing intense red and black fruit driven by aromas of strawberry, sour black cherry and mulberry. The palate is fleshy, loaded with the same fruity notes raising from the glass. The fine-grained tannins balance the acidity and lead to a wine with a considerable volume on the palate. The finish is lingering and elegantly sweet.
"Glorious aromas of flowers, crushed berries, strawberries and dried herbs. Some tea. Full-bodied and layered with a wonderfully curated, polished tannin structure and backbone. Give it three or four years to soften." 97 Points James Suckling
"Such a profound nose of fresh and dried fruit with blackcurrants dates and prunes together with lighter notes of mild spice and pomegranate seeds. The fresher elements provide the drive on the full palate and together with very fine bright fine-grained tannins give a long chewy yet fresh and pruney finish. Hugely concentrated but the balance and poise is impeccable. There's no denying the classic quality of this. Delicious to taste now but this needs a few years to integrate. Try from 2025.' 96 Points James Suckling

" In the running for the wine of the vintage, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is an incredible success and offers more depth, opulence, and purity than just about every other wine out there. Revealing a dense purple color as well as a killer nose of blueberries, chocolate-covered cherries, scorched earth, tobacco, violets, and exotic spices, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, pure, incredibly layered mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great, great finish. As with most top 2017s, it stays tight and compact on the palate, with notable structure and impressive concentration. It has some up-front appeal given its purity of fruit and balance, yet it's going to take 7-8 years to hit prime time and will be a long-lived bottle of Napa Cabernet. Hats off to Doug Shafer and the team for yet another magical Cabernet Sauvignon!" 98 Points Jeb Dunnuck
