The Bottled-in-Bond Act was signed into law on March 3, 1897 and established a standard of quality for American whiskey. To be labeled Bottled-in-Bond, a whiskey must be distilled in one season (January-June or July-December) by one distiller at one distillery, aged in a federally-bonded warehouse for at least 4 years and bottled at 100 proof (50% alcohol by volume). At the time the law was passed, many whiskeys on the market were adulterated with added colors and flavors. The Bottled-in-Bond Act sought to assure the consumer of the quality of the spirit in the bottle. Our club selections this month come from two Kentucky distilleries that have Bottled-in-Bond offerings as part of their core lineups. One is an exclusive PlumpJack Single Barrel Selection.
Cheers!

1792 Bottled in Bond PlumpJack Single Barrel Select Bourbon |
|
Location: Bardstown, KY |
Barton 1792 Distillery was established in 1879 in Bardstown, Kentucky. The name commemorates the year Kentucky became a state. Over the last 140-plus years it has seen several owners, including the conglomerate Constellations Brands (owner of High West Distillery, The Prisoner Wine Co., Modelo, Corona, etc.). In 2009 it was purchased by Sazerac Company, owners of Buffalo Trace Distillery and dozens of other spirits brands. Today, some of their bottlings are highly-sought after, including the Aged 12 Years and Sweet Wheat. We were fortunate to select a single barrel of their Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. Robust and flavorful, it is equally as enjoyable sipped neat as it is in a spirit-forward cocktail like an Old Fashioned or Manhattan. |

Bardstown Origins Series Bottled in Bond Bourbon |
|
Location: Bardstown, KY |
Bardstown Bourbon Company was established in 2016 in Bardstown (nicknamed the “Bourbon Capital of the World”). Their state-of-the-art facility is modeled after the ornate wineries of Napa Valley and has become a popular destination on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Initially, Bardstown released blends of their own distillate and whiskeys sourced from other distilleries. They now offer four core bottlings (known as the Origin Series) all distilled in-house, and contract distill for several other brands. The Bottled in Bond Bourbon Bourbon is made from a mash bill of 68% Corn, 20% Wheat, and 12% Malted Barley and aged for a minimum of 6 years. It is the brainchild of the “Wheat King” Steve Nally, a member of the Bourbon Hall of Fame who spent the bulk of his career at Maker’s Mark. |
