Weller Antique PlumpJack 3-Barrel Blend 'Hat Trick' & Buffalo Trace #17 PJ Barrel
Weller Antique 107 "Hat Trick"
Just like the last Antique barrel 'Story of the Ghost'... If I told you the entire true story, you wouldn't believe me. Yes this is actually a blend of 3 different barrels.
When we went to 'Trace to select our lot, we noticed that the Weller Antiques lacked the obvious differences between each one that we are usually hoping to find. Sure it could have been the previous 15 barrels we had already sampled, but for the most part it was a mix of a 'little more of this' or 'little less of that'. Our group; a mix of industry, friends and family, was largely still in awe of the sheer amount of American oak rolled across the floor. The Weller Antique fans couldn't pick a favorite, the rest of the crew couldn't either.
Rather than play favorites we decided to blend them together. That way no one will have to choose. Hopefully the sum will be greater than its parts. If not, it doesn't matter. When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. You take your shot, and hopefully you score. After all, it's just whiskey.
Buffalo Trace #17 PJ Barrel Selection
Is it an Eagle? Is it a Buffalo? Hard to tell because the Buffalo Trace barrels we've seen coming out of the distillery this past year taste more like their older brethren than they do themselves. Dark caramel, brown butter and pecans are predominant flavors in the nose developing into a rich vanilla bean crème brûlée. The palate is rich and mouth coating with all the flavors confirmed giving way to a long finish that leaves you wanting more. Aged for longer than the typical Buffalo Traces, this one punches above its weight class satisfying the everyday drinker and connoisseur alike.
