Distilled in copper pot stills, then aged in oak casks and bottled at 8 years of age, this is a top-drawer Venezuelan blend of potstill and continuous still rums at a great price. Delicious stuff, it is spicy offering fruity chocolate and spicy notes all at the same time, with a slight touch of leather and tobacco that lets you know it is a molasses rather than a cane rum. It has a nutty, spicy, finish and was winner of a Gold Medal and Best in Class at the Rum Experience, London 2007
Panamá-Pacific Rum is named for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, which celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal and the rebuilding of post-earthquake San Francisco. Distilled at the famed Ingenio San Carlos (“Las Cabras”) distillery, the rum is a Spanish-style molasses-derived rum that initially rested in Kentucky bourbon casks for three years. Rum selections that are approved for an extended maturation are transferred into exhausted Tennessee whiskey barrels for further aging. Panamá-Pacific notes that the age statement reflects the youngest rum in the blend, not just a portion of it.
